Finding and removing duplicate files is an essential process if you want to keep your data well organized. Obviously, it would take too long to compare files one by one, in Windows Explorer. CloneSpy can help you locate duplicate files, on your hard drive or in specific folders. Besides creating separate folder pools, creating checksum files and making other configurations, you can set up a series of automatic actions, so you don't have to click a button for each set of similar files.

You can opt for a standard installation during the setup procedure or install a portable version of CloneSpy, which does not create registry entries. The software is free and you can use it on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7.

CloneSpy is quite flexible when it comes to scanning for duplicates. Folders can be added in two separate pools, located in the software's interface. You can target the folders themselves on a separate window, on which you may also save your pool or merge it with a previously saved pool. Different configurations can be made on the right side of the window, just by clicking a series of radio buttons.

You can set the program to compare the contents of two or more folders within a single pool or compare the items from both pools. Additionally, the software allows you to target duplicates, files with the same names or both. By default, CloneSpy will prompt you for an action when it finds a set of duplicate files, but if you want to focus on other tasks, you may select an automatic action, before starting the scan. Depending on your settings, CloneSpy will erase duplicates from the first or second pool, files that are older, newer, larger or smaller or files with longer or shorter paths.

The general settings menu is the place where you may compile different exceptions lists for names, folders and file extensions. Other settings can be made to ignore certain file attributes or process the files if these attributes are enabled or not. It is also possible to create checksum files and use them to compare folders. Checksum files are saved on the hard drive and you may add them to their own pool.

Pros

CloneSpy allows you to choose what file types to scan and how to process duplicates. You may add folders to separate pools, create and use checksum files and more. The software's interface and its options are easy to understand, so you will not encounter any difficulties.

Cons

The program does not present any serious disadvantages. CloneSpy's flexible and powerful scanning features will help you remove any duplicate files and keep your hard drive clean.
